Rural Programming Initiative
Summary #1, KDNK

Back to Rural Programming Initiative

What did you learn about listening to your station and your research?
This is the first audience survey KDNK has ever done. We were thrilled to see that we are the most listened to station in the Roaring Fork Valley. It's a credit to the 80 volunteer programmers who are allowed to play the music they choose.

Where are your programming strengths and weaknesses?
We learned we have a strong listening audience. Our highest day part is from 6am -8am. We have a strong listening group from age 25-54. However, among KDNK listeners, 31% listen to KDNK most frequently. Two thirds of the stations listeners, 67% listen to another station most frequently. Also, a concern is that more men listen, than women.

What process are you using to decide on program changes?
We are not planning any big program changes at this time. We are keeping the decision making at a staff level. However, in the future our Program Committee, Board and Advisory Committee may play a part in program decision-making.

What program changes have you made?
We are adding Democracy Now to our schedule. Also, we're working to make the sound of the station more professional. We are rotating creative station ID's and taping a "What's on KDNK today" spot each day. We're planning more training for volunteer DJ's. We also feel staying local is important in our news and public affairs programming. We are planning to do more civic journalism and round table discussions that help resolve community issues.
