Rural Programming Initiative
Summary #2, KDNK

Back to Rural Programming Initiative

October 2002

Where are you relative to your goals?

We've made several changes. We added Democracy Now, Monday-Friday after NPR at 6pm-7pm. While we didn't get much response early on, during recent weeks as the possibility of war approaches, listeners have become more and more vocal. We are providing another "voice" not heard elsewhere, to an audience thirsty for as much information as possible to understand and make decisions. We have also been successful at doing daily produced promos telling folks some highlights for the upcoming day. Since we are all fully committed to "patchwork" programming, I had our web designer craft a program guide that is color coded highlighting our many genres of music, etc. It's working beautifully.

Most of you defined one or two target audiences. Based on the research, are you reaching those audiences? If not, what are you planning to do about it?

Yes, we continue to hit our target audiences. I am still concerned over the fewer female listeners. We haven't made plans to change that as yet. We'll add that to our next set of goals.

What is your current thinking about programming at your station? What areas are you monitoring? How satisfied are you with the level of public service you are providing? How do you plan to improve it?

I'm very pleased with programming at the station right now. We continue to be successful in programming with volunteers from all walks of life. Fortunately, they are gifted and paint outstanding musical canvases each day! We have worked to tighten up technical issues with more training.

Have you seen a noticeable increase (or decrease) in your listener-sensitive financial support? (membership, underwriting, community events, etc.)?

Our recent membership drive was the most successful we've had in years!
We made a point to play up that we are so rare...."independent media"....also, the Democracy Now folks came out in force...as well as those who love NPR and the contrast of the two shows. Also, our fine work in covering the fires this summer was appreciated. As well as more interviews of local characters and interesting stories. Our music continues to enthrall our listeners. Our underwriting is better than ever and our community events are well attended and fun.
