In the late 1990's, a fortuitous convergence occurred between Youth Radio in Berkeley, the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, and the Youth Initiatives Program of the Open Society Institute. With major financial support from OSI and significant logistical and creative support from Youth Radio, NFCB has created the National Youth in Radio Training Project (NYRTP). We bring young people working in radio and their adult leaders together once a year for skills and leadership training, and for the joy and inspiration of meeting other young people producing radio. The young people do not just attend the Training; they are actively involved in planning it. They also lead many of the workshops, teach each other skills, critique each other's programs and evaluate the impact of the Training. |

NFCB produces the NYRTP in conjunction with our Annual
Community Radio Conference, and the young people and adults
have significant interaction. We also offer workshops on how
public radio stations can start their own youth projects.
And we have published the two manuals that are part of this
website. Let A Thousand
Voices Speak was supported by a grant from the Youth Initiatives
Program of the Open Society Institute. Get
Set to Stream! was supported by a grant from the Albert
A. List Foundation.

The NYRTP has also received support from The Jenesis Group and the Levi Strauss Foundation. There is a growing number of young people who care deeply about telling their stories, being heard, controlling their own images, shaping the times they live in. Listen! |
