Western Public Radio is a non-profit production and training facility
founded by Leo C. Lee in 1978. Its mission is to support public radio
production through state of the art facilities and training. Western
Public Radio is located at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California.
ABOUT THE FACILITY:
Western Public Radio (WPR) is pleased to announce the completion of
its recent studio and facility upgrade, including the installation of
three new Macintosh Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). With these improvements,
in addition to the DAWs, now all of WPR's studios are outfitted with
rack mounts, patch bays, new microphones, and new carpeting. The PowerMac
7300 systems (with seventeen-inch color monitors) have the latest version
4.x of DigiDesign's popular Pro-Tools software. The inclusion of a CD
burner and a Jaz drive makes it easy for producers to walk away with
their finished product, or work-in- progress, in a variety of formats.
Western Public Radio's studios are available for rental at affordable
rates. An open house showcasing these improvements and celebrating WPR's
twentieth year of service is planned for early fall.
WHAT WE DO:
Western Public Radio (WPR) has a long-standing reputation and record
of providing training, technical and production support for the public
radio system, including both station-based professionals, independents,
and novices. Many nationally recognized and celebrated public radio
producers have entered public radio and honed their skills at WPR. Over
the last 20 years, WPR has trained more than 1,600 producers, engineers,
and managers in both analog and digital audio production technologies.
Over half of the trainees have been women and minorities.
WPR has been a leader in familiarizing public radio professionals with
production in the digital domain since 1988. Many of our trainees have
gone on to become proficient in that domain, working continuously and
winning several major awards for their work. Currently under development
is a job training project for youth and minorities that focuses on producing
digital audio content for multimedia and the Web.
